Glucose Test- Advice??

Okay so tomorrow is the dreaded glucose test.

Seriously, I am DREADING it!!

Probably since day 1 of being pregnant and now the time has come.

I'm not super nervous that I will fail it, I am more nervous about throwing up in the waiting room.

I can't eat for 12 hours- from 8 to 8. Which is fine, I think.

But then...I need to wake up, get ready and head to the hospital- all without eating!!

{do you think I can eat like one little piece of toast??}

I have never done this.

I don't think it's possible.

I need to eat asap. Like,  pretty much the second I open my eyes.

So I am hoping that I will either a. miraculously not get sick at all or b. get sick before my appointment.

So after the no-eating-getting-sick-in-the-morning situation, I need to get blood drawn.

THEN I need to chug that nasty drink {is it really that bad?? Be honest!} I can't even drink water fast without feeling nauseous. How am I going to do this?!

Oh and yes, I am totally giving myself extra anxiety to help the situation.

Or not.

So please, if you have any advice or encouraging words please let me know!!

I may be weird, but I didn't think the drink was nearly as bad as I expected it to be. It reminded me of an extra syrupy orange soda. I wouldn't eat even a peice of toast without asking your doctor, just in case. You would hate for the results to be skewed and have to redo the whole thing. You'll do great and it will be over before you know it!

awe you poor thing.

I agree with Taylor-Made Wife - I thought it had the taste of "extra syrupy orange soda." I had to do it twice if that makes you feel any better! :)

Love your blog by the way - and I am de-lurking :)

I drank the orange flavor and it wasn't terrible. It tasted like REALLY sweet Orange Hi-C drink.

The drink isn't bad at all. It's just sugary.
You can't have ANYTHING to eat, or it will throw off your numbers and you sure as heck don't want to have to end up doing the 3 hr glucose test because you ate a piece of toast beforehand.
Try (if you can) to get your sickness out of the way before your appointment.
It's not that bad, really.
Good Luck!

Praying for you right now! Honestly, after fasting for 12 hours I HAPPILY chugged the orange drink and then jokingly asked the nurse for seconds. You'll do great!

It really isn't that bad. The drink is sorta thick and pretty sugary but they keep it super cold so that makes it better. My doctor told me I could eat before mine just nothing crazy sugary. I had a turkey sandwich and still passed. If you are that worried about it you should call and ask the doctor. I know everyone is different and every doctor is different but they may tell you that a piece of toast would be alright. No worries!

Do NOT eat ANYTHING! You will have to come back later and redo it because it won't be accurate! And the drink really isn't as bad as some people say. I was all worried about it too but it just tasted like orange soda with about a pound of extra sugar in it. Don't worry you'll be fine just bring a granola bar or something to eat right after you are done with the test! That is what I did. :) Good luck!

I'm pretty sure eating ANYTHING might screw with your numbers. Are you allowed to drink anything other than water? If so, maybe you can get some Gatorade so that you'll still have some calories to make you feel like you have something in your stomach? Good luck!

I was anxious about the glucose test too. Once I started it, it really wasn't that bad. The drink is really cold so that helps. Treat yourself to something yummy as soon as you are done! Best wishes!

Ok, this is super weird because I could eat anything I wanted before my test. The instructions even said eat and drink as normal before your appointment. Strange. Mine was in the afternoon and I had been eating all day. I don't understand why it would be different from doctor to doctor.
If you have no choice though I would really try to be sick before you go. I always feel better in the morning after I get sick (if I'm feeling sick of course). As far as the drink-it really wasn't that bad. And you won't have to chug it-5 minutes for a drink that small is more than enough! Good luck!!

I was allowed to eat non-sugary foods that morning. MwW suggested eggs to hold me over...no breads, cereals, etc. It's not that bad, bring a book/magazine while you wait!

It's interesting to me how different doctors/hospitals can be. I was told to eat normal. They told me not overeat anything and that it might be best to have a little lighter breakfast that day, but they encouraged me to eat.

The drink is just super sugary and sweet. :)

On a side note ... I had a friend that was told to just eat a donut and drink a Mt. Dew before her test. She didn't have to even drink the orange drink. I would have preferred that method. Ha!

Good luck!

I thought it was fine. Not bad at all. It reminded me of a non-frozen freeze pop (an orange one)
I couldn't eat or drink 30 mins before taking the drink.
Good luck. I'm sure you'll do fine.

It is NOT bad at all. Just follow all the rules so you dont have to do it again. You want it to go right the first time so you dont have to get a false positive and do the big test which is worse...lots of waiting, blood draws...blah blah. The drink is fine.....its like a flat sunkist. Bring something you can eat right when you are done....its really no big deal. The worst part of wondering how long you could go with out food!! lol
